What is the best time to plant?
I get asked this question all the time by our landscaping clients. People worry about the heat in the summertime, and about the cold in the winter. While extreme heat and cold can kill plants, it usually only lasts a couple days.
Does that mean you can safely plant at almost any time? Yes!
You can plant throughout the summer, as it is never to hot to plant. A Plants only requirement is good soil and water throughout the year especially in the summer. The first summer for any plant can be challenging as usually there root system is not developed strong enough to survive without being water. If you keep the plants watered though the first year they will last a long time.
It is almost never to cold to plant outside in Greenwich. We do not recommend planting when the the ground is frozen. However we find most of the time in winter the ground is not frozen. While the ground does freeze, it normally lasts only a few days. However we find most people forget to water there newly planted plants in winter. they still require water but not as much as during the summer.
In the end, it is never a bad time to plant. Instead of worrying about the time of year, make sure you are planting in good soil. Make sure you water when you plant and throughout the first year especially the summer. With proper watering, soil and protection from wind during the winter, we can plant at any time of the year.
